What is your name, and where are you based?
Hey there! My name is Kate Butchino. I’m originally from New York, but currently, I’m based on the Eastern Shore of Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay.
What inspired you to become a fitness coach and personal trainer?
I was always an active child — the kid who came home with pine sap in her hair from climbing trees for hours or mud tracked through the house from exploring the woods behind my house. From my childhood of running up mountains and climbing trees to my adolescent years running track and swimming competitively, I was always moving. I’m at my happiest when I’m active, so why not have a job that keeps me moving daily AND helps people?
Tell us about your experience as a personal trainer.
I have helped hundreds of people move better and feel better. My experience has been unique as I view exercise as medicine and have taught many how that applies to them. I’ve helped bridge the gap for those who have completed rehab for an injury but are not quite 100%, worked with cancer patients to get their energy back, and yes, helped several people lose large amounts of weight. Being a personal trainer is one of the best jobs on the planet!
What is your approach to coaching? Do you have a particular style or method?
My coaching style depends on who you ask and varies from client to client. If you need a reality check from time to time — I’m down to earth and will get you back to being grounded. If you need tough love — I’ve earned the nickname “Killer Kate” and will help push you to your fullest potential. Ultimately, I approach coaching like a relationship — tailoring it to whatever the client needs — with empathy, empowerment, realism, and a sense of humor.
What’s the best piece of health or wellness advice you have received?
“Each day is a new opportunity to improve yourself. To be better than you were yesterday. So what are you going to do differently today?”
What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not coaching?
You will find me outdoors, probably hiking on a trail or a beach, or I’m cuddling my cat while learning something new, reading, or writing.
How do you de-stress?
I do yoga and meditation daily. Sometimes twice a day — depending on the day. At the end of my day, I do a mental dump either in a notebook or in my notes app on my phone to help unpack my mental clutter and prepare for tomorrow. When I’m in the thick of a stressful situation, I talk myself through what I can control and what I can’t control about the situation.
How do you stay motivated and accountable?
I set up long term goals, mini-goals, and to-do lists every day. Starting my day by looking at my mental dump book and picking three things to knock off the list — whether it be a cleaning task, a work task, or a personal task — I commit to three things daily. Something about crossing out words on a page gives me all the motivation and satisfaction I need to rock out more.
Tell us about your morning routine
I typically wake up to a 16-pound furball meowing and nuzzling me awake after my alarm rings. Morning snuggles are a must. I then spend a few minutes meditating with one of many mantras or positive affirmations — lately, it’s been “no matter how big the mountain, I can climb it.” Stretching, foam rolling, or massaging out the soreness from the workout the day before with a few mobility exercises to get my body primed for the day. I down two bottles of water while catching up on the news or social media. Once I’ve had two bottles of water, it’s time to tackle the day and rock out my to do list items!
What do you enjoy most about coaching through the Verb platform?
I can coach from just about anywhere — as long as I have cell service! Staying in touch with my clients through texting creates a more personal approach while still tracking progress. I love being able to make an impact on my client’s day regularly!
Tell us your strangest / weirdest habit?
I can’t help it — I will make up my own lyrics to popular songs while doing something. I always have a song stuck in my head, especially catchy tunes.
What’s your favorite recipe or the food you enjoy most?
Indian food is my soul food. No matter what kind of day that I’ve had, or what I’m in the mood for, if I have the option of curry — it’s being devoured! There’s so much variety in Indian food too! My go to’s are either Chana Masala with Raita or Chicken Curry.
